Swiss Art Research Infrastructure (SARI)

Research Data in the Humanities. Implementing Semantic Research Platforms

The workshop will introduce core technologies developed for the Swiss Art Research Infrastructure (SARI), providing practical solutions for implementing Knowledge Graph platforms for data production and data publication in the Digital Humanities. Conceived as an onboarding event, the workshop is structured as a series of one to two 45 minute presentations, hands-on sessions and use case presentations taking place over the course of five days. Participants should be able to reproduce and implement their local research infrastructure at the end of the week.

The first three days of the workshop will focus on technology implemented at the Swiss Art Research Infrastructure (SARI) and SARI’s Reference Data Service (RDS) platform. RDS provides a single interface for linking to a variety of reference data sources, a platform for creating new reference and research data, and a mechanism for publishing data to a public infrastructure. Days four and five of the workshop will discuss use cases from various partner institutions, their local implementations of semantic research platforms and data pipelines based on Knowledge Graph technology..

The intended audience are researchers in the Digital Humanities as well as developers in knowledge graph technology. The goal is to enable researchers to understand the potential of semantic data  and to enable developers to make use of the SARI technology stack.

Monday, October 4th 2021, 10-11:00am (CEST)
Day 1 — Introduction and Basics

This session will give an introduction on the use of Knowledge Graphs for humanities research as well as the SARI RDS platform. We will introduce the RDS platform and present examples and use cases.

Tuesday, October 5th 2021, 10-11:45am (CEST)
Day 2 —  Reference Data Services (RDS

This session will provide a deeper look at the SARI Reference Data Services (RDS). We will present the goals of the RDS system as well as its technical architecture, implementation and configuration.

An additional hands-on session will provide a walkthrough on how to set up the platform locally and on how to use it for own data hosting, creation and publication.

Wednesday, October 6th 2021, 10-11.45am (CEST)
Day 3 — Developing with RDS

In this session we will look in more detail on how to develop with the RDS system. RDS provides many options for customisation and extension as well as the development patterns provided by the Metaphacts Open Platform, on which RDS is based.

An additional hands-on session will introduce some development patterns and best-practices which we apply at SARI when developing for and with the RDS system.

Thursday, October 7th 2021, 10-11.45am (CEST)
Day 4 — System Architecture and Data Integration

This session will look at an extended tool stack for publishing knowledge graphs from cultural heritage data and research data across different platforms as used in various institutions.

The first session will give a tutorial on querying the SARI REST endpoint and cover configurations to query external REST services. The second session will explain the processes for extracting, transforming and loading (ETL) data from their sources.

Friday, October 8th 2021, 10-11.45am
Day 5 — Use Cases and Outlook

This first session will present a series of use cases and discuss possible approaches. The last session will open the floor for discussion.
