Prof. Dr. Maarten Delbeke

Prof. Dr. Maarten Delbeke is member of the Executive Board of the Swiss Art Research Infrastructure (SARI) at the University of Zurich, and professor for the History and Theory of Architecture at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.

Maarten Delbeke studied Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at Ghent University, where he obtained his PhD in 2001. After the Scott Opler Fellowship in Architectural History at the Worcester College in Oxford, he became a post-doctoral fellow with the Flemish Fund for Scientific Research. In 2005–06 he started teaching at the Universties of Ghent and Leiden. At Leiden, he led the research project The Quest for the Legitimacy of Architecture 1750–1850, funded with a VIDI-grant from the Dutch Science Foundation. In 2014, he became full professor at Ghent University. He publishes on the history and theory of art and architecture from the early modern period up to the present and is an architecture critic. He is the founding editor-in-chief of Architectural Histories, the online open access journal of the European Architectural History Network (EAHN). He is the author of The art of religion. Sforza Pallavicino and art theory in Bernini’s Rome, 2012/2016, and the co-editor of, amongst others, Bernini’s Biographies. Critical Essays, 2006,  Foundation, Dedication and Consecration in Early Modern Europe, 2012, and The Baroque in Architectural Culture, 1880-1980, 2015.
